Year 9 Vs Wellsway (3-0)With the dismal weather conditions the match was always going to be a scrappy affair. Wellsway had the wind behind them in the first half and dominated the game. Writhlington’s defence however worked as a unit and limited Wellsway to only a handful of chances. The Midfield worked hard and put plenty of tackles in throughout the first half to stop any advances from the Wellsway players. The second half saw a change in formation and shape for Writhlington with a focus on using the width of the pitch. The defence were able to push higher up the pitch with midfield dominating possession and spreading the ball wide to the wings. The forwards controlled the ball and held it up to allow support players to join the attack. It was only a matter of time before the goals arrived. Two goals from corners and a fantastic strike from outside the penalty box wrapped up the game for Writhlington. This victory was based on a the great defensive effort displayed in the first half and for the number of scoring opportunities they created and scored in the second half. Year 11 Vs Norton Hill (5-1)There was no need to highlight the importance of the match to the players. The players were focused and motivated from the whistle making it evident to Norton Hill that they were here to win. The Norton Hill defence was repeatedly tested by Chris Preston who showed sharp movement and fine touches up front with a clear eye for goal. Two goals were just rewards for a player who was prepared to run in to channels and work for the team for the entire duration of the match. Danny Mitchell controlled the match from midfield and cleaning up the loose ball and tracking back throughout the match to support the defence. Writhlington kept the ball on the floor and used quick passing to dominate possession. Jack Nix caused problems throughout the match for the Norton Hill defence as he worked his way up and down the right wing and moving into central positions with the ball. His two goals were deserved and both examples of great team play from Writhlington. Norton Hill faded away as the match progressed and the Year 11’s controlled the remainder of the match although never allowed their work rate to drop.
